Decent work

Everyone has the right to decent work. FIC promotes cooperation aimed at decent working conditions. It has years of experience in this field.

As a consultant, the founder of FIC was responsible for the privatization of the national quality scheme for occupational health and safety services in the Netherlands. Commissioned by the occupational health and safety services sector organization (BOA), he coordinated the cooperation at national level between employers and business representative organisations, trade unions and the national government (Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment), together with the Netherlands Institute for Working Conditions (NIA, now part of TNO). The occupational health and safety services provide care for working conditions for all employers in the Netherlands, with core experts in the field of occupational safety, occupational hygiene, occupational and organizational experts and company doctors. The legal regulation for occupational health and safety services was successfully translated into a full-fledged certification regulation in close cooperation with all stakeholders. To this end, he established the management foundation SBCA that still manages the national quality certification scheme.

As a result of this work, he was commissioned by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment for the transformation of the scheme for personal certification of labour & organisation experts. He subsequently managed the foundation for the certification of companies that work with asbestos. This certification scheme guarantees that asbestos is handled with care, ensuring that health risks are minimised. As a consultant he supported the Central Board of Experts (CBoE).

As an independent consultant, he also supported a national project commissioned by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment and the National Institute for Public Health and Environment, RIVM, to limit safety risks at work and to develop a risk model with international experts (https://www.rivm.nl/en/occupational-safety/calculating-occupational-risks). The resulting Occupational Risk Model, ORM (https://www.rivm.nl/bibliotheek/rapporten/620801001.pdf), was successfully achieved and shared for wider use.

As director of the Royal Dutch Association of Municipalities and their public waste management companies, he served as board member on the Foundation managing the Catalogue on Occupational Health for the Dutch waste industry. The policies regulating working conditions and their implementation are at a high level in the Netherlands. Having seen the labour conditions at waste sites globally, the Founder of FIC is strongly motivated to improve working conditions internationally. Based on his broad experience with quality assurance of working conditions in the Netherlands and with the certification of companies and individuals, both at national and sectoral level, FIC is well suited to guide cooperation aimed at decent working conditions and (additional) sectoral schemes. FIC will wholeheartedly support international cooperation in order to protect everyone’s right to decent work.
